Stockholm Archipelago Hike on Nåttarö

Fire, Beach & Island ExperiencE

Reach the island by sea – Walk it & Live it for a day

Leave the city behind and cross the Stockholm Archipelago by boat, moving through open water, narrow passages and scattered islands. Another way to experience these waters is through our guided kayak tours in the Stockholm Archipelago.

The experience starts with a boat transfer from Nynäshamn to Nåttarö in the southern Stockholm Archipelago. This is the natural way to approach the archipelago — from the sea, where distances feel different, and the landscape slowly unfolds.

We step onto an island we know well — chosen for its mix of forest, coastline and open sea, and for the sense of distance it offers — and begin our journey on foot. We follow parts of the Stockholm Archipelago Trail and move beyond it when it matters. The route is not fixed — it is shaped by experience, by the conditions, and by knowing where the island reveals its best.

The terrain shifts as we move deeper. Pine forests give way to smooth granite slabs, low coastal vegetation and open stretches facing the Baltic. Along the way, your guide shares insights into the environment — how trees grow under constant wind, how plants adapt to poor and salty soils, and how life moves between land and sea.

At times, the island reveals smaller details — a narrow passage through rock, a hidden formation like the small Drottninggrottan cave — places easy to pass by unless you know they are there.

Seabirds follow the coastline, and here and there, signs of more discreet wildlife appear — often unnoticed unless you know where to look. With some luck, seals can be spotted resting on rocks or briefly surfacing, lifting their heads above the water before diving again.

There is no rush. The pace follows the island, with time to observe, ask questions, or simply walk in silence.

At some point, we leave the main path.

The forest opens, the ground softens, and the sound of the sea becomes constant. This is where we stop.

You learn how to make a fire using a fire steel — a simple, reliable method rooted in Scandinavian outdoor life. From there, we prepare a warm meal together over the fire. Nothing staged, nothing rushed. Just good food, made where it makes sense.

For those interested in going further, we also offer outdoor, Survival and Bushcraft Experiences focused on traditional skills and Scandinavian outdoor living. Afterwards, the island reveals a different side.

A sandy beach — rare in the Stockholm Archipelago — stretches along the Baltic Sea. No rocks, no cliffs, just sand and horizon. Time slows down here. Depending on the season, there is time to swim, rest, or simply sit by the water.

We eventually make our way back through the island, following a different line that completes the loop, letting the landscape close in again before we reach the shore.

By the end of the day, we return the same way we arrived — by boat — crossing the archipelago with a different understanding of the place.

What was first seen from the water is now something you have walked through.

This guided hike in the Stockholm Archipelago takes place on Nåttarö, one of the islands of the Stockholm Archipelago Trail. The experience combines a boat transfer, island hiking, outdoor cooking over fire and time at a sandy beach — offering a full-day nature experience close to Stockholm.

  • While nature is never scripted, the island offers a rich mix of coastal and forest environments. Seabirds are often present along the shoreline, and with a trained eye, signs of wildlife can be noticed across the island. With some luck, seals can sometimes be seen resting on rocks or surfacing briefly before diving again.

Those interested in observing wildlife more actively can also explore our Wildlife Safari Experiences.
